How to Set Up Google Tag Manager on Your BidWrangler Website and Bidding Platform

Edited

Set up Google Tag Manager on your BidWrangler website and bidding platform: create a container, send your GTM ID to helpdesk, then publish and manage your tags.

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is the supported way to add analytics and tracking to your BidWrangler website and bidding platform. BidWrangler does not include native analytics reporting, so if you want to see visitor traffic or user behavior, GTM is the path. The setup is a split job: you create the GTM account and container, BidWrangler installs your container ID on your website and bidding platform, and then you publish the container and manage your tags from your own GTM account.

Why Google Tag Manager Is the Analytics Path for BidWrangler

There is no analytics dashboard inside the BidWrangler platform, so questions like "where can I see website or auction views?" are answered by connecting your own analytics through GTM. Tag Manager lets you manage all of your website and bidding platform tags in one location, and it can be configured to track a wide variety of user actions, including common auction-related actions such as user sign-up, registration, and bids. It is also how Google Analytics 4 (GA4) connects to your BidWrangler site, since GA4 is installed as a tag inside your GTM container.

Before You Request Installation

  • You need a Google account and a Google Tag Manager account with a web container created for your site. If your organization has a marketing team or an outside marketing consultant, they are usually the right people to own this, since GTM is an advanced system and BidWrangler's assistance is limited to installing your container on the platform.

  • Locate your GTM container ID inside your Tag Manager account. This ID is what BidWrangler needs to complete the installation.

  • Decide what you want to track. GTM implementations vary significantly depending on your goals, and the tags themselves are configured on your side, not by BidWrangler.

Steps to Install Google Tag Manager

  1. Create or open your Google Tag Manager account and set up a container for your site.

  2. Locate your GTM container ID in your Tag Manager account.

  3. Email the container ID to helpdesk@bidwrangler.com and ask us to install it. Include both properties if you want it on your website and your bidding platform; we install it on both.

  4. BidWrangler installs your container ID and confirms when it is done. This is typically a same-day turnaround.

  5. Publish the container from inside your Google Tag Manager account. Installation alone does not start data collection; as soon as you publish the container, you should start seeing data populate in your Tag Manager account.

  6. Build and manage your tags, triggers, and connected tools (such as GA4) from inside your own GTM account going forward.

What BidWrangler Installs and What You Manage

BidWrangler's role is installing your container ID on your website and bidding platform. Everything inside the container, including tag configuration, triggers, GA4 setup, and page-specific tags such as a tag that fires only on your Sellers page, is managed in your own Google Tag Manager account. For help configuring tags, Google's Tag Manager Help Center at https://support.google.com/tagmanager is the best resource, since implementations differ so much from one organization to the next.

Limits to Know Before You Build Reporting

One limit is worth knowing up front: GA4 cannot track a "purchase" or completed-sale event from BidWrangler, because that event is not available in the platform. Page views, sign-ups, registrations, and similar actions can be tracked, but a completed-sale conversion cannot. If completed-sale tracking matters to your reporting, submit it through the BidWrangler feature request form so it is counted alongside other demand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BidWrangler have built-in analytics?
No. There is no native analytics reporting inside the BidWrangler platform, and there are no platform-provided view counts for your website or auctions. Google Tag Manager is the supported way to connect the analytics platform of your choice to your website and bidding platform.

What do I need to send BidWrangler to get Tag Manager installed?
Just your GTM container ID, sent to helpdesk@bidwrangler.com. Once we confirm it is installed, publish the container from your Tag Manager account and data will begin populating.

Why is Tag Manager installed but showing no data?
The most common cause is an unpublished container. BidWrangler installs your container ID, but data collection starts when you publish the container from inside your own Google Tag Manager account. If you have published and still see nothing after a day, email helpdesk@bidwrangler.com and we will confirm the installation.

Can I use Google Analytics 4 with BidWrangler?
Yes, through Google Tag Manager. Set up your GA4 tag inside your GTM container and it will collect data from your website and bidding platform. The one exception is purchase tracking: a completed-sale event is not available in the platform, so GA4 cannot record purchases.

Can BidWrangler set up my tags or my GA4 property for me?
No. Our assistance is limited to installing your container ID on your website and bidding platform. Tag configuration is managed in your own GTM account, and Google's Tag Manager Help Center is the best guide. Many customers hand this to a marketing team member or an outside marketing consultant.

Can I track how many people visit my bidding platform?
Yes. Once your container is installed and published, GTM can be configured to track visits and a wide variety of user actions on both your website and your bidding platform, including sign-ups, registrations, and bids.

Does Tag Manager go on the website, the bidding platform, or both?
Both. BidWrangler installs your container ID on your website and your bidding platform, so one container covers your full presence.
